A arte que veio pelo Mar
About
Temporary exhibition exploring art produced in India, China and Japan in service of Catholic missionary work, which arrived in Portugal by sea. The exhibition seeks to identify in these pieces the religious iconography used by Carmelites, Dominicans, Franciscans and Jesuits. On display are representations of Our Lady, the Salvator Mundi, the Christ Child Good Shepherd and ivory crucifixes, alongside various porcelain pieces. The works come from private collections and national museums. Together, they showcase the blend of artistic traditions made possible by the maritime route to India. The exhibition opened on 7 August, marking the 89th anniversary of the Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo, and remains on view at the Centro de Religiosidade Marítima until the end of the year. It appeals to those interested in sacred art, the history of the Age of Discovery and exchanges between the West and the East.
