Cambedo, 1946
About
Cambedo, 1946 is a theatrical play by Teatro de Balugas that draws from a little-remembered episode in Iberian history. During the Spanish Civil War, the village of Cambedo da Raia in Chaves became part of a rescue corridor for those fleeing the repression of the Francoist coup in Galicia. The inhabitants welcomed refugees, some of whom would later lead guerrilla groups fighting against Francoism. In 1946, the village was surrounded by repressive forces from both Iberian dictatorships and bombarded with mortars. There were deaths, wounded, and people arrested by the PIDE. Following these events, a long silence fell, and the facts were obscured and distorted by the fascist regimes. The performance is based on the book "Cambedo da Raia. Silenced Galician-Portuguese Solidarity" and revisits Iberian fascisms from this case of solidarity between neighbouring peoples. It is part of Festovar, has a duration of 60 minutes and is intended for audiences aged 12 and over.
