Exposição de fotografias antigas dos Palheiros de Sal do Canal de São Roque
About
Old photographs recover the memory of the Salt Storehouses (Palheiros de Sal) of the São Roque Canal in Aveiro, and of the people who brought life to these warehouses by the Ria. There are portraits of former workers, of people linked to local trades and commerce, and of anonymous faces who, for decades, were part of the everyday life of the place. The images evoke an Aveiro where salt, the so-called "white gold", was one of the great riches of the region. The storehouses received and stored salt, and the São Roque Canal concentrated much of the city's salt-making and commercial activity. The exhibition is inside the Salpoente restaurant, among the old wooden beams and walls that have witnessed this history, and is part of the celebrations of the house's 35th anniversary. It is a worthwhile visit for those who want to better understand Aveiro's connection to salt and the Ria.
