Desenhar do Escuro
António Jorge Gonçalves, CAA
About
"Drawing from the Dark" brings together drawings by António Jorge Gonçalves, a Lisbon-based illustrator and draughtsman, made with white pencil on notebooks with black pages. The artist inverts the usual process: he draws what is illuminated instead of what is in shadow, as happens in woodcut printing. In the notebooks, which came from a year of records, there are urban landscapes, domestic spaces, walks through nature and small fragments of everyday life. Gonçalves describes the black pages as darkened rooms, which need the white pencil to show what they contain. The project began as a limited edition book and has already been shown as an exhibition in other locations across the country. In Águeda, the exhibition occupies the Studio Room of the Arts Center and will be on display until the end of the year. It is a proposal for those who enjoy drawing and illustration, and for those who want to see how the absence of light can be the starting point for an image.
