Centro de Arte Oliva
About
"Horror Vacui" is a group exhibition at Centro de Arte Oliva in São João da Madeira, curated by Marta Jecu. It brings together dozens of anthropomorphic figures from the Treger Saint Silvestre Collection: animals, machines, spirits, humans, monsters and angels. The title alludes to the fear of emptiness and the desire to fill it. The figures form a tumultuous field, where anarchy and excess function as a defense against uncertainty. A text written specifically for the exhibition is presented as a sound piece. It can be heard in all rooms and accompanies the visitor throughout the tour. Marta Jecu is a research fellow at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development (CeiED) at Lusófona University. The exhibition runs for almost a year, which allows time to return and view the pieces at leisure.
