Immanuel Wilkins Quartet
About
North American saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins performs in Espinho with his quartet, in a concert designed to recreate the atmosphere of the Village Vanguard, the historic jazz club in New York. Wilkins burst onto the scene in 2020 with Omega, his debut album on Blue Note, considered by The New York Times the best jazz record of the year. This was followed by The 7th Hand and Blues Blood, where he explores themes such as memory, spirituality and African-American identity. The quartet has remained together since their Juilliard days and has performed on renowned stages throughout the world. The concert draws from Live at the Village Vanguard, his first live recording, released in three volumes. It includes extended explorations of original compositions and a version of "Charanam", by Alice Coltrane. It is a good entry point for anyone who wants to hear contemporary North American jazz played live.
