O Leão da Estrela

About

Film screening of "O Leão da Estrela", a Portuguese comedy that is part of the programme for the centenary of the elevation of Gafanha da Encarnação to parish status. The story originated in a revue theatre piece from 1925 and reached cinema in 1947, directed by Arthur Duarte. It later had a remake. The protagonist is Anastácio, a fanatical football enthusiast, who travels with his family to watch his team's big match. Along the way, to maintain appearances before a wealthy family hosting them, he pretends to be rich. The deception becomes increasingly complicated, especially when the hosts decide to return the visit. It is a comedy of manners, with misunderstandings, romances and popular characters, designed to be watched as a community. The screening is part of the parish's centenary celebrations and takes place at the Manuel das Neves Cultural Centre.
