Turandot, Giacomo Puccini
About
Turandot, Giacomo Puccini's final opera, closes the 49th edition of FIMUV with the Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa, in partnership with Operafest Lisboa & Oeiras. Princess Turandot proposes three riddles to anyone who wishes to marry her: whoever solves them wins the throne of China, whoever fails is beheaded. Calaf, an exiled prince, sees her for the first time, surrenders to her beauty and decides to take the risk. The score combines Puccini's melodic thread with bolder harmonies and sounds inspired by Chinese music, featuring pentatonic scales and the rhythm of an adventure film soundtrack. The cast brings together Russian soprano Olesya Golovneva in the demanding title role, tenor Ermin Ašćerić (Calàf), with Aida Pascu as Liù and Nuno Dias as Timur. The original production is from Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, premiered in 2024, directed by Daniela Kerck, and comes to Santa Maria da Feira in coproduction with the Orquestra Filarmónica Portuguesa.
